What Makes a Pearl Valuable?

Lustre

Lustre is the most important quality factor in a pearl. It refers to the way light reflects from and appears to glow beneath the pearl's surface.

High lustre pearls appear bright, radiant and almost mirror-like, while lower lustre pearls may appear dull or chalky.

Surface Quality

As natural creations, pearls often display minor growth marks or surface characteristics. Cleaner surfaces are generally more valuable, though some unique markings can add character and individuality.

Size

Larger pearls are rarer and generally more valuable, particularly when paired with exceptional lustre and surface quality.

Cultivated in the warm waters of Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines, they are produced by the large Pinctada maxima oyster, which requires long cultivation periods and highly specific ocean conditions. This naturally low yield makes South Sea pearls one of the most limited pearls available. 

Their remarkable size, soft satin-like lustre and naturally occurring white and golden hues make them some of the most coveted gems in fine jewelry.
